Documentation by Carl Warner
Axis and Origin is an archive of printed grids and concentric found objects accumulated during travel which engage the conceptual possibilities of pressure and trace to expose the contours of surfaces. Material matrices include ironing boards, manholes, pavements, tram tracks, a bleacher seat, and a bed. Dematerialised and displaced from origin, the works are realised through processes of frottage, tracing, embossing, screen-printing and lithography. Revealing what is known to touch via the aesthetics of pressure and chance suggests an alternative to Modernism’s painterly flatness through the compression of three-dimensional objects into a two-dimensional plane.
