Untitled (Ode to Joy No.1) and Untitled (Ode to Joy No.2) systematically abstracts Beethoven’s classical ninth symphony in two mediums: thread and paint respectively. The rhythm and order of the notes predetermine the size of the support and colour value. The transfer from aural to visual transforms the stave into a grid of form and colour, making visible qualities of music such as pitch, phrasing, and the division of time.
